Childhood’s Garden

How often have you heard someone remark off-handedly, “Oh, to be a kid again!”?  After all, that’s when life was simple; obligations and commitments didn’t exist, and every moment of time was yours to spend as you desired. Every day was a gift to be opened and celebrated- an adventure in the making.

Right? Can I get an amen?

Well, yes.  And no. Nostalgia is a funny thing, so let’s allow that our memories may be a little fuzzy here. With the challenges of adulthood, we often forget the trials of youth. We dismiss a child’s lack of power and influence in their own lives, what it means to have decisions made for you, and how life contrives to present circumstances and conflicts that would overwhelm even those with the benefit of perspective, knowledge, and experience. We romanticize the notion that childhood is a series of still moments of perfection.

Seasons of Change

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” – (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Contentment comes to me most easily in the days of Spring and Summer. Filled with abundance, these seasons bring the Earth to life after a long winter. Plants grow, flower and fruit with abandon.  The streams and lakes warm to bathwater, golden sunlight paints every surface, and the air is sweet with the sound of buzzing and heavy with a heat that warms and renews not just my body, but my soul.

Tell Me What You Really Think

“I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.” ― Flannery O’Connor

Throughout life, we write for many different reasons, and each word serves a purpose in that moment. For me, writing is of particular significance, because a very large part of my work life involves research and writing. It works out quite nicely, since those are things I enjoy and that come relatively easily to me.

At least, most of the time.
